The Markham Elementary School holiday tradition of making gingerbread houses turned 35 this year. Students in first grade worked with their "Buddies" in the fourth and fifth grades during this annual event that pairs students to engage in the fine art of gingerbread house construction. Starting with a solid foundation of graham crackers and stiff white icing, the two day process culminates in a house decorating extravaganza using every delectable treat from gum drops to marshmallows and peppermint swirls. Team work is the goal with students working together to build their vision of the gingerbread dream house. Collaboration, friendship, creativity and fun made for a memorable experience for Markham students while keeping a very sweet school tradition going for, hopefully, another 35 years.
